Indie Lens Pop-Up Season Finale

The Magic Valley Arts Council, Idaho Humanities Council and Independent Television Service host the season finale of Indie Lens Pop-Up Free Film Screening of Served Like a Girl at 6:30 pm on Wednesday, May 23, 2018 in the Sligar Auditorium of the Twin Falls Center for the Arts, 195 River Vista Place, Twin Falls. Enjoy a FREE slice of pizza for film viewers at 6 pm, each additional slice is $1. Moderated by Navy Officer Hayley Rienstra, a discussion will follow the film. Get to know the women who served our country and hear their stories by attending our free preview screening. Served Like a Girl, a powerful and poignant look at a group of diverse female veterans as they transition from active duty to civilian life after serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. Struggling with PTSD, homelessness, broken families, serious illness, physical injuries, and military sexual abuse, these inspiring women find ways to adapt to the challenges they face through participation in the “Ms. Veteran America” competition. Guided by event founder and veteran, Major Jas Boothe, the women work hard to prepare for the competition, and in the process, recover parts of their identities they had lost on the battlefield. The “Ms. Veteran America” competition was established in 2012 to encourage women veterans to recognize and support their sisters as they return to civilian life and face debilitating emotional, social, and economic challenges. More than a vehicle for shared recovery, the competition’s primary mission is to raise funds and awareness for America’s 55,000 homeless women veterans, a goal that resonates strongly with the women profiled in the film. Hayley Rienstra was born and raised in Southern Idaho. She completed high school in 2008 and enlisted in the United States Navy June of 2010. She attended boot camp in Great Lakes, IL and then went on to Meridian, MS for her advanced Yeoman training. After training she was stationed on the USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN (CVN 72), which was homeported in Everett, WA. She completed 2 deployments to the Persian and Arabian Gulfs, her first deployment was 6 months and her second one was 9 months. During her time in the Navy, she advanced to the rank of E5, which is a Petty Officer Second Class. She was awarded two Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals, a Good Conduct Medal, a Secret Clearance and received her Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist and Enlisted Aviation Warfare Specialist Pins. Her main duty in the Navy was to be the Administrative Assistant to the Executive Officer of the ship. She also managed the Executive Admin Office consisting of 10 junior Sailors. Indie Lens Pop-Up is a nation-wide documentary film series offering groundbreaking public education and civic engagement initiatives featuring screenings of films from the Emmy award-winning PBS television series Independent Lens.
